So I looked up the division, and on February 23, 1945 they crossed the Rur river. I guess that is where he died.

 

If you haven't already found it, this link takes you to the 28th's AAR for Feb, 45. Covers the Roer crossing on the 23rd on page 7, it sounds brutal.
