"A magistrate over here today is in hot water just for having ammunition found at his home."
Urqh, wonder how the ammo was found. How is it that this became in the news?...I recall a fellow on Youtube who videoed men looking into his daughters room...They turned out to be from the government(?), trying to see if they had an unlicensed tv ?...Could that be true? ..If same were to occur here, there'd be a big problem....Don't want to stray from original topic, but think this is relevant....ps, enjoy your writing style. I'm thinking of using more Francais just to keep it fresh... Vive la defferance. :)

I read this in the second article.

I would go to jail. I carry a pocket knife with me every day and have since I was about 12 years old. A pocket knife is very common among men around here. Heck, my daughters each have one-I gave them to them. I don't think they carry them with the to school, but it would not bother me if they did.

Are there no longer any testicles in Australia?

I noticed this years ago when reading on the US DoJ website, of who murdered who and where they murdered them. I live in a county that has roughly 1/4 of the population of a neaby large city, which has about 350,000 inhabitants. Theory would have it that our murder rate should be 1/4 of the nearby city, but that would be an incorrect assumption. The most recent crime data I could find shows 12 murders in my county from 1999 to 2008. The county that contains the nearby city had 282 in the same period. Twelve is certainly not one quarter of 282.

I got my data from http://recordspedia.com/

Extermely biased and proof that we are indeed NOT America's twin...the only people whinging here in Australia are those that want their guns...just to let off, for no other good reason. Didnt realise that so many Americans had Flintlocks and percussion rifles in their cupboards...a woeful article.

"In fact, you can’t carry a weapon of any kind. Even non-lethal alternatives like pepper sprays, mace and Tasers are banned. You are not allowed to carry a pocket-knife."

Similar to Britain, except that you can carry a pocket knife as long as the blade is 3 inches or less-

Why the hell does anyone need pepper/mace sprays or tasers?!

My wife carries pepper spray because she is not as large as a lot of potential assailants.

The knife I usually carry is about 3 inches long, I am embarrassed to say.:D

If that were enforced litteraly then you couldn't go out in public if you had any martial arts training.

I don't generally carry a gun in my hometown, though I did for a while after the murders I posted about on another thread. I do, always, have a pistol in my car. It's well hidden, but instantly accessible to me. I have it there for the same reason I have flares, an entrenching tool, a first aid kit, some tools, etc - it's a remote area and if you don't have the tools to take care of yourself, you're screwed.

When I travel, I always take a gun and I generally only travel to states that recognize my Alaska carry permit. For example, last fall we went to the southwest and had fun (and spent lots of money) in Nevada and Arizona because those are free states where people can go armed. My little Colt Mustang is invisible, but it's always there.

Nobody has to fear me and my gun. And when I see somebody else leaning over at a restaurant or casino showing that tell-tale bulge that reveals a gun, I'm reassured rather than dismayed.

Fear of guns as objects is paranoia, and fear of people legally carrying guns lacks clarity of thought. Fear of criminals on the other hand, is simply common sense. How does one counter the risk that criminals present? Carry a gun...

I just looked up some interesting statistics. In 2011, bicycle deaths numbered 677, while rifles of all types (not just "assault" rifles) accounted for 323 deaths. So, bicycles are more than twice as deadly as rifles.

When will we ban these evil two-wheeled killing machines?

    Here too.

I noticed that friend of mine had two cell phone cases on his belt a while back. One was the size of a flip phone the other looked like it would hold an iPhone. I asked him why he carried two phones and he said he didn't. One case held an old-style flip phone, while the other, larger one, concealed a small body .380 semi-auto. Looking at the case, I would have never known that it was a gun holster-it was the same dimensions of an iPhone case.

Alabama allows open carry of a pistol (except in a vehicle, where it is considered "concealed", even if it is sitting in plain sight on the dashboard*), but some people get antsy if you are visibly armed in public. I think I am going to have to get me one of those.

*which makes it odd that you can walk down a busy street with your pistol on your hip and all the law enforcement can do is wave at you and say "hi." But, once you get in a vehicle, they can arrest you for carrying a concealed weapon. It makes it awfully hard to transport a pistol in the absence of a concealed carry permit, which are rather easily obtained, so long as you have $20.

I think everybody should have a carry permit. Even if you don't carry as a habit, you may find yourself in the situation where you need to carry and without the permit you'll be on the wrong side of the law.

Alaska doesn't require a permit to carry open or concealed, but you can still get the permit so you have the option in other states that recognize carry permits. I've kept mine active just for for that reason.

Somebody sure is because this thread is full of it. We have our guns, we will keep our guns, and we don't care what anyone thinks about it, especially the government. We dare defend our rights (I saw this statement inscribed on a monument at the eastbound rest area on I-10 just inside the Alabama state line). Your world ain't ours, and ours ain't yours. Live where you want and the way you want to, but without the means to do so doesn't guarantee much. It's live free or die (the New Hampshire state motto) as far as I'm concerned. You never see any pro-gun types start threads and go on and on and on about why they think everyone should own guns or what type of guns they should own (see the vice idiot Joe Biden's position on this idea on youtube). If you don't want one or need one, then good for you.

Thought the whole idea of martial arts was not to need weapons?

Judge all you want, it won't matter to me or change my ideas on weapon ownership. :) I've never been really concerned about someone judging me because it does not really matter to me what other think of me. If I were worried about what people thought of me, I would probably never be able to leave the house for fear that I could not live up to their standards. I'll admit it, I judge people all the time, good, bad or indifferent. :)

I am more worried about the thug with the hidden weapon, be it a knife or firearm. Even where firearms are "prohibited" there will always be those who have one. See what is going on in your own country.

I don't plan on being the last one shot. I also don't plan on finding myself at the mercy of some thug just because I had a flat tire. And I damned sure am not going to let a rapist have his way with my wife or daughter just because I let his buddy get close enough to me to put a knife to my throat or crack my skull with a baseball bat.

I was raised around weapons and have always viewed them rather benignly, sorta like you would any other tool. I have defended myself from an insufficiently-armed assailant once, while in the French Quarter and I have some friends and family who have done likewise in other locations, usually in large, metropolitan areas. Some of their stories are somewhat humorous, with one involving the loss of the would-be assailant's bodily functions. I'll have to tell them to you sometime.

We have saying here: An armed society is a polite society. Rural Southerners are not known for their politeness for just any ol' reason. :D

Well, according to Bernard P. (Barney) Fife of Andy Griffith fame, his whole body was a weapon. :D
