Great scene--damn it ;-)) The anticipation of seeing what the heck happens next is almost too much stress to bear ;-)
In my local supermarket last week picked up a DVD of what must be a remake of this movie. Now - I haven't seen the original but I have to say that this one - made in 2008, in German with English subtitles and a cast largely unfamiliar to US/UK audiences - was reasonably good viewing. It's directed by Wolfgang Panzer (is that a real name ? ) OK - the CGI aircraft are rubbish and one of the US tanks is post-war, but I'd certainly say it's worth a look. Unlike a certain other highly-touted recent WWII movie, this one won't be going straight to the charity shop !
Yes, the film was remade in 2008, it did not do well in the reviews. For the longest time the film was only available in Germany and the copies were hard to come by. However, the original film was recently(2009) released with subtitles in the UK, so now it should be much easier to find. However, still being an import it will probably be around $30 US.
Thanks, Takao - I don't usually like re-makes and I was 'gentle' with this one as I haven't seen the original. I shall look out for the earlier one. I'd still say the remake is OK - not as good as 'The Bridge At Remagen' but a lot better than 'Battle Of The Bulge'......
Hey Carl, thats one of the best Anti-War movies they made. It shows the friends before they went into the Wehrmacht and their true characters while they are in the Wehrmacht. And their senseless way to die for the weird ideas of the old Austrian. Regards Ulrich
Hi U/ sounds like my kind of a movie ;-)) I saw the clips Ray posted of it and I definately want this movie. I can get a copy at Belle & Blade if they are still around?
The link is good looking but not around, Carl. Amazon has several starting at $ 9.50. Great movie to see and a must have too. Take care Ulrich
Thanks my friwend. I took a quick look in their site and yup-they are still expensive as hell-which is why i never ordered a copy of Die Brucke or Stalingrad: Dogs Do You Want To Live Forever.
Seen both versions and for some reason I seem to prefer the original one. Nothing wrong with the newer version but the black-and-white version has more "originality" I think.
Carl, all three are good movies! Hey we should have an war movie evening with those good movies plus "The longest day". How about Friday evening?;-) You bring the movies and i have the beer and the chips and before a Wiener Schnitzel of course! Take care Ulrich
Kai-Petri you´re right! The newer one has some complete other scenes as in the book to read, good made, but the B/W version seems to be more authentic. Regards Ulrich
An interesting film about the German Home Front is "A Time to Love and A Time to Die" by Douglas Sirk. It is based on a novel by Erich Maria Remarque and he actually appears in it. It is basically a Hollywood melodrama but it takes place completely on the German side and follows a German soldier. It's a very interesting film but it's very rarely on TV.
Thanks Greg. I have finally had the chance to see the clips Ray posted and its certainly one i weant to get. i found new copies of it for sale on Ebay for about $10 bucks. I want to get this along with ATTLAATTD. I saw the latter movie a few times and loved it even if a good portion of it has John Gavin romancing Lilo Pulver. Oh and Remarque also played a part onscreen in that movie-as Professor Pohlmann I think?
i just bought it on ebay.de looked for the movie from time to time, never found it. after this topic decided i really need this film in the collection.. so now i need to wait a day or three..
I cant wait till I can start buying more movies too. Just ave to wait till my Cats infection if cured.
