"For example, production of aviation gasoline had been reduced by 95 percent, which created yet another oil paradox. Without fuel, the fighters could not fly to protect the oil facilities, which meant more destroyed refineries and therefore less fuel. Rather than waste fuel taxiing, aircraft were towed to runways by teams of cows and horses.
Speer saw the inevitable end when he encountered a column of 150 trucks of the German 10th Army, each of which had four oxen hitched to it. Even many of the vaunted V-1 and V-2 rockets had to be hauled to their launching sites by horse-drawn wagons"

in fairness to arapaho (or was it navajo?) it never got cracked. the enigma did.

    the russian invisible bridge?

coconut milk used by marines as blood expanders?

or how 'bout the japanese bicycle in malaya?

the 30-'06 that gave off a hell of a lot of smoke, obscuring the shooter's vision after 10 rounds?

there are advantages and disadvantages to joining a war LATE, aren't there? hehe...

A very interesting read is the book "The Crash of Ruin: American Combat Soldiers in Europe" by Peter Schrijvers. On page 89 it describes what German equipment US forces found . Bicycles, horse tack ,wagons, horse drawn artillery, ect. it even mentions trenches for horses at Normandy

I've been looking for some of those pictures of German "vehicles" being towed by horses ala The Beverly Hillbillies and need to post up some of the wood buring fuel converter vehicles running around. These make the above look good. By 1944 the German military and vehicles was getting really pathetic.

By 1944, the Germans had been fighting for 5 years, the Ami's......barely gotten their feet wet yet. Germany was out of oil.
After reading this Thread, I wonder just how the German Army ever managed to bumble & fumble their way across all of Europe.

LOL Too onesided?? In a thread about the German Military lol? Well if anyone one wants to add anything about other armies they can go ahead. But I bet you wont find many instances where the majority of a country's transportation throughout the war was horse drawn :p. Especially one that some think was highly mechanized and High Tech.

By the way that is one of my favorite movies. Though I think John Wayne was a little long in the tooth for the part .

This thread reminds me of the part in "Band of Brothers" where Webster is yelling at the Germans as they march, defeated, in the center of the road. Webster starts yelling at them. It's hilarious!

    here is the clip!
