My name is Steve and I found this forum while researching the history of my father's infantry division, the 44th, in WWII. Many may know it was deployed near Luneville, Lorraine, France and ended up in Imst Austria where it linked up with 5th Army troops coming out of Italy. I'm in my late 50s. I was very interested in the history of the war early on, until high school. If anyone remembers the Avalon Hill games, I played those as a kid against many of my neighbors who were active duty officers. As we lived outside of Washington DC, there were lots of opponents to play against. My Dad never volunteered information about the war. Although he spoke German growing up in NYC, he never spoke anything but English to the family and everyone else after returning from Europe. In this area, I am focused on the history of the 44th, from activation in 1940 to demob in 1945. I'm also interested in the transition to the cold war. I don't collect or play games anymore, but have been going to Europe to look over battle sites, contact people and look at records. I have a couple of other hobbies, none of relevance to this forum. Other historic eras that interest me currently are the period from the end of the last Glacial Maximum to the development of writing in Mesopotamia. In particular the effects of climate on society have a large space on my shelves. I'm looking forward to participating in this well run and feature rich forum!
Steve, Welcome! Glad you see the quality in this forum... Hope you stick around, and enjoy your stay. Jem

Hello Steve and welcome to this fine place! I am sure you will enjoy your time here. After you get to know us better, I may have to bend your ear a bit (via e-mail) regarding your studies on the effects of climate change. . . . very interesting topic! Cheers!
