Well, I feel pretty terrified. Between ammo and reloading components I've got about 3,500 rifle rounds around here. I'll be safe as long as they march up my driveway one at a time, but if they send 3,501 soldiers, things are going to get all stabby!

As I have had family serving in the military along the border region I will say I feel for our troops that must serve there as it is not as kept up as perhaps it should be. My nephew was glad to finish serving in this region because of the difficulties associated with being there ......Americans can easily be victimized by conditions along the border even if fighting fails to break out with the ongoing incidents that will occur in the area. If actual fighting breaks out there will be some tough service for our side at best.....equipment is not always new, supplies not as plentiful as other parts of the world. It simply is not our priority in our days of facing terrorists. It is a place where nearby our "friends" may also be our enemies depending on what they hope to get out of the situation.

I suspect the rhetoric is more about whipping up support in North Korea for the new leader, than anything else. If you don't have a crisis to galvanize support, you create one.

I can't help but worry for Seoul, if it comes to war against the states the ROK has no way to stop all of the guns aimed at it's capital. I wouldn't really put much thought into the threats of the hermit kingdom though for the pacific region, their huge military is pathetically outdated, not to mention the entire world knows that they have only enough fuel reserves to make it perhaps to Seoul's outskirts anyway. Un just has to be vaguely threatening to the west every couple of months, just like his father did.

considering, if they do make it to Seoul they could ransac the fuel supplies that the south has, giving them that little bit extra to reach out untill they find another sutible fuel source, plus there is also China, they could help them out

I'll refer him to Hilary's warning to Iran...we have the ability to "obliterate" you...And countries like Australia will be standing there shoulder to shoulder with the US...and we wont be alone.

If this backwards, delusional leader had any brains, he would realize what he has.

If the 2 Korea's merged, they are an instant economic power. Take the cheap labor of North Korea and join it with free enterprise South Korea. It would be staggering. They could mass produce anything from shoes to machine tools at a fraction of anyone.

It could threaten China and their now fragile economy. China has the most at stake here. China is now all in as an economic power. They have over built their infrastructure in a way that would make the dot.com bust look like penny poker.

Could Kim Jong just a puppet for China ? I hope not.

Dont know what the crossed out bit is about...

I agree...but Germany could've been a super economic power in 39...but one needs a leader with actual intelligence and forsight and an ego that can be tamed...This sook and Hitler were none of these. Sadly, i dont think the "illness" is a puppet...i think China is getting as exasperated with them as we are but cannot show it...

thats scary to think about, along with the fact that South Korea has thier hands on some US military technology, if the north and south unified then god knows what would happen if they reverse engeneered that tech and massed produced it

The cost to South Korea of Unification would be enormous - estimated at between 2 to 3 times their current GDP of the South ie US$ 3 trillion.

I doubt the US or China would need to worry about economic competition from Korea Inc for at least a generation.

But beware of Dictators, they usually mean what they say!

The above is also predicated on the fact the rest of the World would actually purchase the goods. Doubtful but not out of the question.

North Korea has a long history of throwing tantrums and making a lot of noise until the USA shuts them up by handing them a bunch of goodies. I see no reason to think this is anything more than more of the same.

The North only needs to get to the outskirts of Seoul, really....then the International community wieghs in, pushes them back, they end up on the Yalu River again, and....

...any reservations China has about Un's behaviour vanishes and they weigh in on North Korea's side again. That's the real underlaying problem with trying to do anything military about the Korea issue - there are certain "fallback positions"...tripwires for the sake of a better term...that will automatically trigger and kick off certain visceral reactions. Doesn't matter HOW much of an *rsehole China thinks Un is right now - anyone except the North Koreans sitting on the opposite bank of the Yalu and the Chinese become standard issue defensive Chinese again :(

In other words - Un only has to start and loose a war to get China to prop him up again!!!

Maybe China will pre-empt and annex parts of the North prior to any attack from the Allies...
