Yeah Lou, red eye gravy is wonderful stuff, I make it all the time with bacon drippings instead of ham fat from frying up a ham steak. If you want to make it with a fried ham steak here is how. Gravy ingredients: 1 tablespoon of flour 1 cup of cold coffee Fry a couple of ham slices until nicely browned, set the ham slices aside and keep about a tablespoon of drippings in the pan (save the rest for another time). Then stir in a tablespoon of all-purpose flour, and stir it until the flour starts to brown a bit. This is where you need a cup of cold left over coffee from yesterday, or just a cold cup of coffee, while stirring the flour and drippings, slowly add the cold coffee and whisk it into the mix and bring to a boil and make sure you get all the left-over meat bits into the gravy and stir until it thickens to the consistency you like. Pour it over biscuits, grits, hashbrowns, or whatever tickles your fancy. A very similar gravy I make is with bacon drippings if I don’t have a ham slice or two for the drippings. All done the same though and still just as tasty as the dickens.
Salt fish... Dried cured cod... Was the male breakfast of most dads in liverpool on sunday mornings. Wives lying in and a fish smell hovering over the city until tuesday, or until the mothers put a pot of scouse on..
Clint, we actually save our bacon drippings in the refrigerator. I use it to cook fried eggs (over easy), my wife cooks meatballs in it, and we use it to brown ground beef for a variety of dishes. It gives great flavor.
According to Wiki , Fried Coke , is a Coca-Cola FLAVORED batter that is friend and topped with Coca-Cola Syrup , Whipped Cream , Brown Sugar , and a Cherry..Sounds like a delicious 830 calories hmmm
Do you know what is probably worse than fried butter.. a deep fried burger.. wow! i believe that after taking a bite you'll be able to actually hear your arteries clogg.. imagine that with a side order of fried butter ... not even an land mine can do the damage that does to your organs...
I've had Deer before, but then last time was back circa 1992 or so. My Brother cooked it in beer batter-which I hated the beer taste to it but other wise-it's not near as tough a meat to eat as I had heard it was. Also, it tasted to me, more like Rabbit or something simular.
Hi Lou, you can't go wrong with Suthurn Foods ;-)) I think Charleston is where Paula Dean has her Restaurant at? or somewhere around there? Anyway, everything I see her cook on TV looks so darn good. She made a simple desert one time-I don't recall what it was called, but, it was something I never thought of making before. Take a flour tortilla, briefly fry it (in butter) toss a light layer of powdered suger on it, cook up some apple slices mixed with Cinnamon and Brown Suger, place that on it piping hot, and then place 1-2 scoops of (your favorite) ice cream on it, squirt some Chocolate Sauce over that and then sprinkle on some finly chopped Pecans or Walnuts over that and then pile some whip cream over than and finish it with a heaping toss of some candy sprinkles. Looks great and I know tastes great but the calories are probably your daily amount that should be taken in. I WILL try that sometime though. PS, I love Italian food as well-just as long as its not seafood based as I hate almost all seafood.
Hi Clint, I think soaking it in Lye is probably where they go wrong at-with that dish? I can't speak from experiance though and only from an opinion ;-)) The first time I ever smelled it being cooked, it smelled lots more potant than buring car tires. Hi CJ, thanks for the info on fried Coke. I might get around to trying some sometime? However, i'd rather drink it ice cold and in a large glass That deep fried burger looks nasty. I don't know if I could ever force myself to trying one of those-and as much as I love fried foods-that one really sounds disgusting. Gimme Fried Chicken or Chicken Fried Steak-or ???? anytime over a fried burger.
Yeah, I save mine in the fridge as well, in a cup that looks like somebodies bare feet! I use it for all of the above, making red eye gravy, and for rubbing down potatoes before baking them. Keeps the skins from crisping too much and adds great flavor to them. I also use the stuff for rubbing down my turkey before roasting, instead of olive oil (which is healthier), or butter (which is more expense), and that makes a nice flavor to the bird as well.
Ah ha! I save mine as well... thanks for the tips Clint. Never thought of the potato thing or rubbing down my turkey before a good roasting! Making a killer Tex-Mex recipe tomorrow... It involves flat iron steaks and a marinade worth a try let me know if you want the recipe... I think you'd appreciate it. all the best, jem
Anyone here ever have any Cheeseburger French Fries? I don't mean FF placed on a burger but made into a mixture of sorts, breaded and fried adn then dipped in gravy or catsup or even Mayo-all of which are
Saw those being covered on Unwrapped on the Food Network a while back, never tried any, but seems like a decent idea taste wise. But, I was reminded of that comedian who was talking about PB&J in a squeeze tube so you could just squirt it onto a slice of bread and have "instant" sandwich. "I'm so busy and in a hurry I cannot take the time to open and use 2 separate ingredients!" I kind of like having the two flavors separate actually, one a change from the other.
Hi Clint, that's where I saw them at-on Unwrapped. They do look good though. Hi Jaeger, not everythings Fried here but, try a Chicken Fried STeak at the Jailhouse Cafe or The Red Barn in San Antonio, and you will see why we Southerners crave fried foods. Since you might only eat it once-your Arteries will be safe ;-))
Right, Carl, I'm sorry but if you keep talking about chicken fried steak I'm going to have to get the thread closed. It sounds far too deliscious and I am far too jealous of you having access to it to allow it to go on!
We often have something similar here, except we call it fried bread, its very bad for you but who cares,,you butter both sides of the bread and throw it in the frying pan. When we were small we also used have suger sandwitches,
