I don't see the bomb being used anywhere in Europe except on German soil. With the exception of military production centers and communications points the allies went out of their way not to bomb the cities of France etc. By the time the actual tests were completed, we can what if all day long and there is a section on this forum for that, Germany was colapsing at a pretty good rate. Japan's philosophy of war, honor, and fight to the last breath made the choice to drop the bomb on them easier. Rank and file Germans were surrendering when opposition was overwhelming, only the radical SS types were choosing to fight to the last breath in large numbers. There are arguments that if we would have continued fire bombing Japonese cities they would have capitulated before an actual landing on the beaches. The fact is after the second bomb, it did not take long for the surrender to take place. I think the point about Germany's past history of agression was reflected in the way they were treated after they surrendered. The Japonese got off pretty easy when it came to war crimes, reparations, and the like. Just my $.02.
