What is surreal to me is when he says, "it's over." That wasn't a news story...a faceless casualty to this war. That was my friend. Is it good or bad luck that we have that last moment on tape? I don't know. I know I watch this clip a lot, especially when I can't sleep. SFC Matthew Blaskowski was a real person, a son, brother, uncle, husband, friend. He was a soldier. A leader. A warrior. A hero.
    Memorial Day. My God.

RapidAlien I remembered seeing this when it hit about the 30 second mark. And just like the times before, I made it until the 7:04 point until the Damn lump in my throat caused the watery eyes !

Dauntless, thank you for the mention of Tome, which is another place in this state that gives some reverance, and I want to mention that it has become very popular to make this trek sometimes coinciding with the famous trek to the Santuario de Chimayo, and received quite a bit of news coverage this year. There is also talk of a Veterans cemetery to be made in Roswell for the veterans and it seems it may also go through despite the lack of money in the economy...people have just stepped up with it so they are overcoming the last of the obstacles to get it done. I think of people lost to war very often so it takes little to bring me to "the meloncholy" as I still have kin serving, and I have friends who have lost family to both Iraq and Afghanistan. Thankfully, the troops seem to be so much better than me with their attitudes. I am quite thrown aback by how many times they have had to return to service and I am grateful they have such great attitudes about that. At times they are even anxious to be on their way to get back. That scares me for how hard it may be for them when it is finally done. It certainly reflects that their attitude is so much better than mine. I can't give it to anyone here but I hope sometime they get to watch "Shakey's Hill" which is a documentary about our troops in Cambodia which I pull out now and then and watch because it has my school mate's story who gave his life finding the cache of weapons the drive into Cambodia was to accomplish. There are some trailers out there if someone is interested but they never were as satisfying for me as haveing the complete video. A few months ago I attended a ceremony at our high school where they created shrines to him and another person from my hometown who lost their lives for their country. So Shakey AKA Chris Keffalos and Alex Munoz who was blown up in Beirut Lebanon are remembered at the high school they attended.

Initial mistake....the cemetery is to be in Roswell if it goes through...I put Albuquerque by mistake.

I've been there several times, but I never made the trek on foot. I know Albuquerque is the largest city, but Roswell would be a better site for a veteran's cemetary as the area drips with history and the community is more reverant than Albuquerque.

I really like both those songs. Paint It Black is very closely associated with the Vietnam War the Dire Straits song is outstanding and I've seen a bunch of Iraq/Afghanistan videos set to it. Good job!

I always liked this song. In my talks with Old Hickory, I mentioned it to him. He stopped for a moment and seemed in thought, then told me that the song held strong memories for him and was one of his favorites from the war. He said the men with him liked the song a great deal also.

This isn't a video but a picture that always makes me melancholy. I was nine years old and my dad was on his second tour in Vietnam. When this picture came out I just knew one of the dead Marines was my dad. I started crying and my mother wanted to know what was wrong. I told he dad was dead. She wanted to know why I thought that, she was sure he was O.K. I told her I knew because I recognized his boots, strange what kids think. Anyway I was really depressed and couldn't be convinced otherwise till we got his next letter in the mail.

Here's the picture. The funny/strange thing is that years later when I was a Marine and my brother(also a Marine) was in Beruit, my dad and I were sitting around drinking and I mentioned this story. He asked to see the picture. I got out an old book that had the picture in it. He said he remembered the scene well but had never seen the picture. He had been there that day and told me there was another tank off to the right of the picture and he vividly remembered being there, standing with his radioman when the tanks brought the bodies out. Twilight zone stuff. There used to be one of my Dad's former Marines, a mortarman, that stopped by everytime he passed through town to have a beer or ten. He liked to tell stories, I showed him the picture and he too vividly recalled that day, in his words a very bad day.

Dang. Not generally a big country fan (to each his own, though...if that's yer cup o' tea, more power to ya!), but this one has been on my list since I heard it somewhere awhile back. Great video to go with it, too!

I run the video (putting song lyrics and sermon notes on-screen, playing video clips, etc) for my church...heh...they didn't know what they were getting themselves in to when they hired on a computer geek with a deep and abiding respect for veterans and active-duty military, a history nut, and someone who's not really been noted for letting little things like "Memorial Day Weekend" slide by without at least a heavily respectful nod in the direction of all of the vets in our congregation. Last year, July 4th fell on a Sunday, so I heckled them and got to put together a kick-ass presentation to go with the songs our music director had picked out (patriotic, of course). Tomorrow, the music director for our first (traditional, generally older) service slipped in a patriotic song, and I got them to "agree" to play this video. Its 4 minutes long, and they didn't want to play it at all, but I kept harping about how great "Reveille" was at ONLY 12 minutes...so to shut me up they're letting me play this one. Its got some of the worst salutes I've ever seen (mostly from civilians, so I can understand that), but the video....well, just watch it.
