Yes another almost un-named veteran of the Ost Preussian front.......as I mentioned earlier so many actions so little accounts. I can think of Berlin and it's many actions. No one to recount those brave individual battles as only a few made it into captivity or retreated through the tunnels to the western allies.

Panzerknacker, please see the thread on thirdreichforum about panzerknackers, there's some evidence there that says that Viezenz only destroyed 7 tanks.

Paul, do you know how Doss and Wenk destroyed the JS-2's? Was it really a destruction by panzerfaust, magnetic mine, grenade bundle or similar?

    best regards/ daniel :)

    Daniel :

I think the bogus counts were brought up in a heated debate on ritterkreuz.de

Some guys were so called authorities..in their own eyes.......and decided to catch us all on their knowledge but in reality was a bunch of undocumented lies. There is no doubt through photo evidence that the two highest ranking tank killers have the tank strips on their sleeves. A big problem for several is that the photos are not taken at war's end so we has interested persons cannot make comment to their final tally's, we can only go by what is in the photo earlier in the war. I beleive Wenk was responsible for jumping 1/2 Stalin's with panzerfausts behind a rock/brick wall, and the Stalin's never knew what hit them !

But I've heard people say that Viezenz himself have said that he only destroyed seven tanks. Or did I misunderstand you now? Where can I find more information about Wenk and Doss?

    G. Viezenz was reported to be a very private man and Daniel yes I have read the same infos from TRF and the old Feldgrau.net archiv's some 5 years ago with the same stuff. The only pics I have seen of him are the right sleeve of his showing 7 kills and he is wearing the RK, but no one has shown him in a very late war photo. could the amn have score more kills, most certainly, as well as a host of many other brave men. Whether they were awarded more tank strips is possibly the question. were they available during the thick of fighting and of course the rapid changes in the war during the last three months of 45 when everyone was just trying to survive and not caring a bit about awards.......I guess what would be nice if we could find a copy of the daily reports of 10./Grenadier rgt. 7, then we would know of his accomplishments.
Paul maybe referring to RK winner Alfred Regeniter's book of Stug Brigaded 276. In the latter pages of this little booklet it mentions the actions of the Hussarkaserne. The Abteilung had lost their stug's so the crews were armed with an array of weapons, mostly Panzerfaust 100's. The Abteilungs men would walk carefully down the streets of Danzig hunting down probing Soviet tanks. The Hussar barracks had a stable, main gate and a trench system on the one side of the stables with a high wall about head height. In this wall(s) were cut-outs with a zig-zag trench system at it's base........from a nearby hill 4 JS II's squezzed through a sunken raod and drove towards the barrack walls. They stopped at line abreast, their barrels aimed at Danzig. They fired a few rounds. They they started up again. From the 3rd battery of Stug Abt. 276, it was alerted and 5 men rushed to the scene, Schwarbach, Buck, Doß, Warken and Wenk. Stabwachtmeister Schwarzbach gave the men orders to fire through the holes in the walls at the idler/drive wheels. They knocked out three of the four Stalins, the fourth Stalin reversed itslef and came through the main gate? the Stalin had it's turret pointed backwards. Wenk now jumped in front of the Stalin with his Panzerfaust and fired and knocked out the tank. The men then retreated south out of the city except for Stabwachmeister Schwarzbach who wounded himself by the backblast of his panzerfaust, thus burning himself and his uniform.......Paul then finishes with the last couple of sentances on this brave soldier...Willi Wenk.

    Daniel,

An account of the actions of Gerhard Doss and Willi Wenk feature in the book Knight Gunner, which is written by my friend, Ritterkreuztrager Dr Alfred Regeniter and is his memoirs as a member of 3 Batterie Sturmgeschutz Brig 276.

They destroyed 4 JS2 Tanks with Panzerfauste for the loss of a Stabswachtmeister wounded.Erich is right they were hiding behind the barrack wall and destroyed 3 Tanks by firing through holes in the wall. Wenk detroyed the 4th Tank by standing up directly in front of it and destroying it with his last Panzerfauste.

I have also learned of this action directly from Gerhard Doss himself, unfortunately Willi Wenk died before i could correspond with him.

As an example of what we have been discussing regarding the confusion of the last days of the war,Alfred Regeniter did not know about his award of the RK on 29/4/45 until 1974!!

    Paul :)

Thanks Erich! I think I've seen two different photos of Viezenz, both with seven silver badges. I think you have a point 'tough but his own statement to only have destroyed seven tanks still bothers me.

    Is the following correct?

Obergefreiter Willi Wenk (Stug Brigade 276)- 1 or is it two?
Obergefreiter Gerhard Doss (Stug Brigade 276) - 1
    Stabwachmeister Schwarzbach (Stug Brigade 276) - 1

    best regards/ daniel :)

Paul, so Doß is still with us then ? Do you know if any of these men were awarded anything as to the way of destruction strips or documents ? Most probably not I would imagine.......I am looking for other mentions via two more German language Stug histories.

    Erich,

Yes Gerhard is still with us,although he is not in the best of health ,i last heard from him about 2 months ago.

None of the men from the Hussar Barracks in Danzig ever received any official recognition of their brave actions.

Must admit my favourite Panzerknacker would be SS Hauptscharfuhrer Adolf "ADDI" Peichl who is known to have destroyed 11 Tanks and won the RK,DKiG,CCC in Gold,Wound Badge in Gold. What a soldier.Known throughout the DF Regt as a "Lone fighter"

Paul, thanks for the brief info on Herr Doß. I wish him well ! The documents/awards not being truly fitted to these men does not surprise me at all. Again I give reference to my friend wachmeister Helmuth Reichert of the Infantry Regiment 43 of the 1st Infantrie Division. All they had to combat in late 45 was the Panzerfaust since all the armor----- Stug III's of the Stug abteilung were all destroyed, they just had odds and ends to fight the hordes of Soviet armor types. They fought as I recalled earlier in and around Königsberg which still hasn;t been adquately covered in books, the retreat through the marshes and forrest's to Hela/Danzig and the bay setting traps for tanks and infantry, many rear guard actions, losing men one by one from the overwhelming superiority they were charged with stopping. The offiziers had long gone to wait to be shipped out of the Danziger Bay while Helmuth and others formed those last bit of resistance.......they will never be awarded a thing or even given notice for all they did.

    Erich,

Can only agree with you,the courage and commitment of many ordinary German soldiers during those last few months of the war against vastly superior odds was extraordinary, and unfortunately many deeds of great heroism, which in different circumstances would have led to awards went unnoticed other than by their Kameraden.

    Paul :)

CDS, not sure on the three men mentioned of the Stug Brigade 276 what there final scores were, it could have been more of course even with earlier battles in 1945.

I chatted with Helmuth yesterday concerning the term that Timo had asked about and Helmuth stated again how scared they are were pitted against Soviet ARmor both T-34's and JS II's with the Panzerfaust. The Soviets would just smash through everything and run over carts, vehicles which pretty much had infantry on the run and if they could take cover behind hillocks or behind a tree, even then they were not safe. Only having a two man crew with the Panzerschreck seemed to give a little relief. Helmuth when up against Soviet armor would take his men and spread them out, two to the right and two to the left and then two in the middle......all this in a zig-zag pattern so when there were 3-6 Soviet tanks coming through they could be hit in the sides. Each of Helmuth's men would have one Panzerfaust apiece and sometimes two.

Quite welcome CDS. Also, before the institution of the TDBs--there were undoubtedly hundreds of other tanks destroyed and no recognition for them--Ie--no TDBs but possibly ek2 and ek1s.

Daniel I would add the guys from Stug Brigade 276, but I do not know what their personal scores were. As for my friend and his squad of rear guard to the front ammo carriers and I cannot even tell you how many tanks they knocked out or helped knock out. Helmuth doesn't talk about the retreat through his Ost Preussia much except to say it was a pure hell. Everything he remembers including his village of Insteburg was basically flattened. His home is owned by two Russian families, the men being total drunks while the women do all the work. The fields are overgrown masses of weeds everywhere and the roof looks like it could fall in any time, abandoned, rusted trucks and farm equipment litter the roads and fields......enough of the personal nature of my post, but Helmuth and his men never received any confirmation as most of them were lost in action. Helmuth received the frozen meat order and that was it. Not even a EK II which he should of had as well as the EK I in my opionion, for bringing up loads of reserve ammo, guns/mg's, mines, Panzerfaust, Panzerschreck.....anything that could be fired against the Soviets in any capacity by foot as well as 12 ton Ford trucks. Shot at by tanks, infantry and even an IL-2 and yet he made it through ..... quite a guy ! If only I could understand his broken English or his Ost Preussian accent..... ;) Thumbs up !

Hi Erich, I will update the list tomorrow, I've got a number of new men. It's getting a bit complicated since the list now also includes panzerknackers who didn't recieve any badge. It's quite easy to learn German, atleast if you live in Sweden, the trick is to learn as much words as possible, the grammar will come off by itself eventually (or never). :D

    Best Regards/ Daniel

    # These ones aren't KC holders but were considered as such for sometime, this of course doesn't mean they didn't destroy the number of panzers in question. I guess either the documents about the award don't exist anymore or they just thought they should have received it. Another thing you must understand is that Hitler gave an order to decorate any soldier, who destroyed more then 6 tanks with a Pz.Faust or Pz.Schreck, with KC. ( Mark V's note)

¤ Please note that the list contains names of soldiers who qualified for the badge but didn't recieve it, this has been noted when possible.

A total of 18.541 of the silver and 421 of the gold badges were handed out making a total of 20 646 knocked out tanks.

I apologize for the inconsistency of the list, this will eventually be corrected. Thanks to everyone who has contributed with information to this list. I'm truly grateful for your kind help.

Thanks Erich, I really appreciate those words! I'll do my best and keep researching this subject. So far I haven't written to any veteran but I've promised myself to do so soon. Unfortunately I don't have any address to a panzerknacker- perhaps someone would like to share any with me.

    Best regards/ Daniel :)
