Well, we did invade France (more or less!) during the Napoleonic Wars.
Napoleon is the great French military leader who swept all Europe before him, before those nasty English defeated him - with a "little" help from Prussia, but we won't mention that in this poster for obvious reasons!!! :D
And the cult of Napoleon's greatness did (apparently) take root in France immediately after the whole thing, with subsequent leaders trying to emulate his military successes. Napoleon III (his nephew) being the most laughable.

But still, Joan of Arc would be better. She did turn the tide of the 100 years war, and she makes a great martyr figure...

Pedantic Apprentice must strike - Joan of Arc turned the tide again. The first turn was achieved by Bertrand du Guesclin but after his death the English started over as jolly as before.

    So does Napoleon.
Like ancient Promethée(don't know the english name, the guy that was attached to a roc by Zeus for having given fire to men), the british punished him by "attaching" him to a lonely roc in the southern atlantic, where they could continously humiliate him till his death.

    Prometheus.

I never thought of St. Helena as a mountain in the Caucasus, really, but the connection is easy enough if you wish to embellish the feats of Napoleon...

The Apprentice seeks to overthrow the Master...
It is hardly 'turning the tide' if you start losing again after he goes...
After Joan of Arc England never really stood a chance.
After du Guesclin, we should not have stood a chance, but sometimes people refuse to listen. After all, it was during his tenure that England won Agincourt, the most celebrated battle of the conflict.

Castelot - agreed. And of course the fact that he had been beaten once, then returned and roused France again...
And then those evil British sent hm off to Elba and poisoned him. ;)

    Indeed, because...

I thought the order of events was Leipzig - Elba - Hundred Days - Waterloo - St. Helena.

Posters from the Nationalist side are more difficult to find, because they're not politically correct today, not even for historians
    Fortunately, we have British hispanists
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And some here in North America...The firts of these is a National poster, (l've asked a friend in New York to locate a few more..) yhe second one from the "Republican" side- the caption reads "First! (let's) win the War! Enough vain ( empty ) words! Note the flags of the various groups that compossed the "Popular Front". prominently among which is that of the communist Party, and at the bottom, the flag of the Red Army.since Russia supplied weapons an, "specialsts" and sent the "International Brigades" to fight in Spain-.. The third poster is American and needs no comment. It echos the feelings l've heard from many a WW2 Vet fthat served in The Pacific Threater of War

Yes, besides communist party that was almost a defacto government inside a government, every sindycate and political party (even anarchists, the most organized) wnted to rule something or someone their way.
That's the most important reason of their defeat, because Franco wasn't a military genius. The only premise he knew (oversimplication warning) was exterminate all oposition (even in his side), only then win the war.

    Spanish march song:
Presume caballería de tener muy buenos carros
pero es la infanteria la que siempre pisa el barro.
Presume la artilleria de tener grandes cañones
pero es la infanteria la que pone los c####es

    Does it need translation? :D

Interarms arguments happen since before the Roman Legions i think. 8)

Well, the rhyme is lost but:

    Cavalry boasts about good tanks
but is infantry who steps through the mud.
Artillery boasts abou having big guns
but it's infantry who has the "cojones"

As i said, what army has no interarms rivalries? :D

The artillery simply fires balls, it is the infantry puts ITS own balls on the line
How often have we seen that artllery fails to knock out their intenended target and to do the job properly they send for the "Grunts"???.

Good point.another example of what happens when artillrey fails to do the job...hahahahahahaha!!

P.S. actually l don't feel that way,l have the greatest respect and admiration ffor the gunners l met in maneuvres and on the field; but being, after all ex-infantry. l feel (quite rightly) that we landed the dirtiest and most difficult jobs..but then again ":if you don't like he heat...get out of the kitchen"..
