Good one this one...No not Honnington. Its got or had something to do with Satcom and Usaf apparantly. But even with my pretty head full of signals routing info stored menacingly in back of head, I cant for the life of me ever remember coming up with this place. I am definately at a loss. Just came up in some private research I'm doing on Unmanned technology and satellite links. Never heard of it.
Bodyguard of Lies? (Patton's deception efforts?) I just finished reading the book (Bodyguard of Lies: The Extraordinary True Story Behind D-Day By Anthony Cave Brown) Excellent read (near 100% preview on Google Books) but it did not get into specifics like this. Too bad. A location list would have been a wonderful appendix.
The only Tottington I know of in that area is a small village in Norfolk, not far from Mundford, There was a American base at Mundford during ww2.

Fascinating stuff..Big unmanned aircraft before todays uav's. I'll keep looking though...It just turned up in some research I was doing. Think its part of Stanford mock up training area now. UAV tac ops may train there I suppose in the battle area. Jigsaw fits. Thanks guys. And found this PIC too.. It seems it was also an area taken up in ww2 with locals expelled...Not what I was looking for but amazing what you bump into when looking. Again, cheers all.
Joe Kennedy was killed flying a converted B-24 involved in Project Aphrodite out of Fersfield in Suffolk. This was the now-famous attempt to load war-weary, stripped-down B-17s and B-24s with explosive, take them up to height, bale out and the hulk would then be radio-guided to specific targets such as U-Boat bases etc. Very secret indeed at the time but a total failure.
Didnt they also try similar stuff with B17 and Catalinas...Meanwhile the Germans were using the old Fritz Glider radio controlled bomb...And one thing...Lots know it...I didnt....Were'nt a lot of the v1's actually launched or dropped from a Luftwaffe airframe...Uav's are currently the bane of my life...Dont ask.
Fersfield operated Aphrodite B-17s ( USAAF) and B-24s ( US Navy ). I'm not sure about the Catalinas.....and yes, quite a number of V1s were air-launched from Heinkell IIIs over the North Sea.

On Google Earth I started in Ely and did a rough grid search for airfield patterns , often still seen, but no luck there Perhaps if I had a pint or two I could see a wee better!! Gaines
