Judges are sometimes harsh. For example: a man was sentenced to five consecutive life sentences without parole. I don't understand how someone may stand such a sentence except by four consecutive re-incarnations into the same body.

About the "Pussy Riot": disrespectful young "artists" have gone a bit too far and got slapped a bit heavier over the mouth. They will survive their sentence and will get a bit more respectful.

I'm sure even "democratic" judges send youths into prison to cool down and get more respectful

Not sure now, but thinking a life sentence was 25 years at one point here in Canada. Maybe that is where "throw the book at him" came from.
Or it was beating a guy over the head with a thick book.

So, a 20 year old who committed multiple murder could serve 3 life sentences and walk out as a 95 year old man.
Some guys need to know they have behaved badly, and will die in jail. Am ok with that.

While we are here, have you heard some states are reintroducing firing squads?
Because there have been issues with procuring drugs for state executions, they are re enacting firing squads.

Your leaving out a lot of information here...Who was the defendant and where did this take place...

For example, Dennis Rader, the infamous "BTK" serial killer received 10 consecutive life sentences for the 10 murders he committed in Kansas.

The catch here is that Kansas, along with New Mexico and Alaska, allow parole hearings no matter what the crime. Now if Rader was serving his sentences concurrently, he would be eligible for parole after 15 years - if he had been sentenced to 100 life sentences to be served concurrently, he would still be eligible for parole after 15 years. However, since Rader is serving his sentences consecutively, he will not be eligible for parole for 175 years - 9 * 15 years + 40 years for the particularly heinous strangulation of Dolores Davis.

Of course, consecutive sentences are sometimes handed down so that the families of each victim can have some solace that justice has been done for their particular relative, rather than having all sentences combined into one.

Also, if one sentence is overturned on appeal, there are still several others to guarantee that this particular violent criminal does not see freedom ever again.

Finally, back to back sentences serve to underline the the severity of the crime to whom ever may look to pardon our certain criminal.

Thanks for the explanation Takao - I knew there is a catch. Yet, I consider ordinary death sentence with swift execution much more efficient, just and cheaper.

I don't think there is such a thing as a swift execution here in the States.

Ok...The Mob and the gangs still practice it, but not the legal system.

Hyperbaric chamber as a form of execution (thanks gawker).
Easy, no mess. Criminal dies happy.
"Mr Jones, please wait in this room while the jury deliberates"- ...goodnight Irene. Prisoner has no grief, it is sudden.
Or we make him read A58's stuff, which could kill faster.
    nah
    Love you man.

As far as I know only Utah is pushing to be able to use the firing squad in lieu of drugs. Some pharmaceutical companies are showing resistance to selling the assortment of drugs used in the death concoction. The PC mindset is running amok. Now they are ruining executions. Never fear, bullets are cheap and rednecks will stand in line for miles to get a chance to be a part of the justice system if the opportunity arises for them to participate. And they'll bring their own tools of the trade too. Utah used to have firing squads back in the 70s. At the time, the soon to be departed had the option to chose his demise, the electric chair, gas chamber or firing squad I believe. Ah, the good ole days....

Bullets are still cheaper. And with today's budget crisis's we face, clearing out death row will save the state a bundle. The inmates on death row just won a lawsuit against the state to have air conditioners installed in their barracks. Imagine that, a/c for those b@$tards. They better get used to the heat here first.

What does this have to do with the Rooskie Navy going tits up anyway? Let's get back on track. Anything new to add to the subject matter?

Admiral Vladimir Chirkov, the CinC of the Russian navy has stated that they will upgrade 10 nuclear submarines, Past and recent comments to conflict in a small part as to what submarine classes are to be upgraded. In the past the Sierra class was included with the aim to have two recommissioned by 2017, however recently only the Akula and Oscar II's have been mentioned. The reasoning for these upgrades have been put down to the delays in the Yasen class which was intended to replace them, however the ongoing conflict in the Ukraine is causing a severe strain on the ship building industry that was already struggling to cope with what they had to build.

Could be a chance of increased capability gab in the Russian submarine service in the next few years.

Wonder if delivery of the 2nd and 3rd Borei class nuclear subs will be realised in 2015, as scheduled.

They've already been commissioned Poppy. Alexander Nevsky(K-550) was commissioned back in December, 2013, and the Vladimir Monomakh(K-551) was commissioned in December, 2014. The fourth Borei, Knyaz Vladimir, is not expected to commission until 2017. http://www.siberianinsider.com/russian-navy-to-adopt-knyaz-vladimir-in-2017.html

Perhaps you mean the Project 885 Yasen/Graney/Severodvinsk class. The second is expected to commission in late 2015 or 2016...With 2016 being the front runner of the estimated delivery date. While the third, Novosibirsk is expected to commission in 2017.

The bit i had read, actually had the class as "Borei"... So a spelling mistake does not forebode well for the rest of article.
But it went on to say that the 2nd and 3rd boat would be delivered in 2015 - if read correctly, which sometimes does not happen.
Also failed to note when article was written...poppy fail.

Not a spelling mistake per se...

Borei/Borey seem to be used interchangeably in western media. Although the generally accepted spelling is Borei.

Looking at Wiki The first 3 Borei class submarines were laid down in 1996, 2004 and 2006 with them being commissioned in 2013 (January), 2013 (December) and 2014.

Based on construction times it is impossible for them to have any commissioned for quite some time.

The 4th, 5th and 6th submarines have been laid down July 2012, July 2014 and December 2014. These submarines are actually the Borei II class. Best circumstances would allow them to be commissioned in 2020 for the 4th and 2022 for the 5th and 6th. That being said should note that at the time the 2nd and 3rd submarines came online Russia was in one of its best economical situations in a long time, that has now faded away so could lead to longer build times.

    Other Russian submarines under construction/planned.

Yasen class, The 1st being laid down in December 1993 and only being commissioned in December 2013 (At those construction times Hitlers Z plan actually looks feasible). Submarines 2-5 have been laid down July 2009, July 2013, July 2014 and March 2015, the second submarine officially has been listed as having a launch date of 2015, And expected to be commissioned in 2016, however based on past experiences I don't think the 2nd submarine to be commissioned for at least 3 years after launch.

Kilo class Improved. 6 have been ordered by Russia, 2 are active with 1 more launched. Probably the only submarine Russia wont have an issue building in current economic climate, Cheap, Simple but still very capable.

Lada class, 8 are planned with only 3 started. The 1st was laid down in 1997 and commissioned in 2010, The 2nd and 3rd have been laid down in 2005 and 2015 with claimed commissioning dates of 2017 and 2018, The second submarines has a good chance of being commissioned in 2017, the 3rd one has a better chance of flying to the moon then getting done start to finish in 3 years.
