The fifth photo in this series is so haunting. The foreground guy with the bike is so in focus and yet there are hundreds of others, just like him, not one looking at the camera... very ominous.

Kai, the salute is for all these fantastic photographs from the Eastern Front. You keep coming up with more and more . What I like so much about them is that they are not iconic, finely composed, but rather shots of soldiers doing what they do during lulls. Really like the one with the "war dogs". I sometimes forget how many of them were and still are in combat.

As always, Kai, great photos. They are all the more interesting because they are not posed. They show not only the hardships of the Eastern Front, but what the men did as they relaxed.

I'm currently reading about the convoys in the Arctic. I wonder if you have any pictures from Murmansk or Archangel. The bravery of these men (and women) is astonishing. We don't hear or read enough about them.

From the Soviet side I have not seen many pictures, not sure if the normal soldier was allowed to have a camera so probably the photos from those places are propaganda shots all?

AFAIK the ordinary Ivans did not have cameras (nor were allowed ones) so all soviet photos are official (= propaganda).

Yes-and the Merridale account says that at the end of their service the Red Army soldiers were made to swear an oath never to speak of a long list of subjects so; in Russia for a long time there was only the heavily propagandized version of the war. http://books.google.com/books/about/Ivan_s_War.html?id=O05kBIKeSlEC
The best first hand account of The Great Patriotic War was that of Vasily Grossman's. The book was drawn from Grossman's secret notebook the discovery of which would have certainly rated the author an appointment with an NKVD executioner. http://books.google.com/books/about/A_Writer_at_War.html?id=pgtrI2-FvZcC The cult of secrecy in the USSR was pretty much absolute until recent times.

Another set of nice pictures, Kai. Were all of these taken on the East Front, or are some from Finland?
