What I can remember having not sung it or heard it for many years now, is

"Who's that knocking at my door? Whose that knocking at my door?
Who's that knocking at my door?" Cried the fair young maiden.

"It's only me from over the sea" said Barnacle Bill the Sailor.
"I'm rough and I'm tough and I'm dirty enough" said Barnacle Bill the Sailor.

I know there are other lyrics, then

"I'll come down and let you in. I'll come down and let you in" Cried the fair young maiden.

Googling the song title just now got me to some extremely raunchy lyrics. While someone else eventually told me there was a naughty version (which my Dad never ever told me there was) I didn't expect those.:eek: I probably wouldn't have listed it if I'd realized how graphic....

Apparenty, there are various versions on You Tube. This one was clean.

The Bonnie Blue Flag

Harry MaCarthy

We are a band of brothers and native to the soil,
Fighting for the property we gained by honest toil;
And when our rights were threatened, the cry rose near and far,
"Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star!"

Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

As long as the Union was faithful to her trust,
Like friends and like brothers both kind were we and just;
But now, when Northern treachery attempts our rights to mar,
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

First gallant South Carolina nobly made the stand,
Then came Alabama, who took her by the hand;
Next quickly Mississippi, Georgia and Florida,
All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Ye men of valor, gather round the banner of the right,
Texas and fair Louisiana join us in the fight;
Davis, our loved president, and Stephens statesman are,
Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

And here's to old Virginia, the Old Dominion State,
Who with the young Confederacy at length has linked her fate;
Impelled by her example, now other states prepare,
To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Then cheer, boys, cheer, raise the joyous shout,
For Arkansas and North Carolina now have both gone out;
And let another rousing cheer for Tennessee be given,
The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag has grown to be eleven.

Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Then here's to our Confederacy, strong are we and brave,
Like patriots of old we'll fight our heritage to save;
And rather than submit to shame, to die we would prefer,
So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern rights hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Re-adjustment Blues by John Denver
Bomb Iran by Weird Al Yankovic
Zombie by the Cranberries
War by Edwin Starr
When Johnny Comes Marching Home by the US Military Academy Band (clip on youtube)
A Scottish Soldier by Andy Stewart
Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day
Johnny Reb by Johnny Horton
Johnny Got His Gun by Metallica-One
La Marseillaise by the Gang at Rick's Cafe Americane (Casablanca, not a war song, but used in a semi-war movie)
Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner (Apocolypse Now soundtrack-not a war song, but the way it's used....)

Down where you belong. Written by Irving Berlin in 1914? A completely anti war piece you can hear the original version on youtube. The funny side of it all is by the time we entered the war. Sheet music descriptions cranked out songs like KILL the Hun and Over there. One of the versions of down where you belong is done by Groucho Marx wonderfully done if I may add.

If I don't make it back-Tracey Lawrence
Til the last shot's fired-Trace Adkins
Sand Hills to Sandals-Stephen Covell
Once a Marine-Chad Can Rys

All of these are songs from the past year. All of them very very good.

Sitting on a mine in the Maginot line,
Things have turned out nice again,
The Army life is fine"....)

"Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major"
"Honeysuckle Rose"
"Watch The Birdy"
""The Warsaw Concerto"...(not a WW2 song, I know, but it was played so often on Allied Radio that you really cannot go past mentioning it)
"You Go To My Head"
"Pistol Packin' Mama"
"(We're Gonna) Hang Out Our Washing On The Siegfried Line"
"Over There!"
