Here is a recent journal article about a "Soviet Jihad Against Hitler"-- It includes translations from a 1943 speech by a Muslim leader in Soviet Central Asia who calls for the world's Muslims to join together & wage jihad against the Nazis: https://www.academia.edu/14581427/_A_Soviet_Jihad_Against_Hitler_Ishan_Babakhan_Calls_Central_Asian_Muslims_to_War._Journal_of_the_Economic_and_Social_History_of_the_Orient_59_1-2_2016_pp._237-264 I am interested in doing more research on Muslims who fought against the Nazis. There is a lot of good research out there on Muslims who fought with the Nazis (including David Motadel's excellent recent book, Islam and Nazi Germany's War), but I want to learn more about the other "side" of the story. I would be grateful for any leads, links, book/article recommendations, anecdotes, personal histories, or anything else you all may be able to offer that sheds light on the history of Muslims who fought with the Allies (whether in the Red Army or anywhere else). Thank you!
The British Indian Army swelled to 2.5 million Indians. Muslims, Hindus, and Sikhs. The Free French army had large numbers of Senegalese, which were predominantly muslim. Check out the histories of Ali Haidar, and Noor Enayat Khan.
Never heard of a "Jihad against Hitler". Usually, Hitler had a lot of supporters in the muslim world. Reasons? Antisemitism Most muslims are aryans, part of the superior race. the translation for Iran is country of the aryans. War against France and Great Britain, which colonized the muslim world. .... There is a lot of material to find about Hitler's connection to the muslim world. https://www.amazon.de/Hitlers-Muslime-Geschichte-unheiligen-Allianz/dp/3898090965?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0 https://www.amazon.de/dp/3896787284/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=556245207&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=3898090965&pf_rd_m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&pf_rd_r=8SZ8SSWR5Q11DSMMNSDD https://www.amazon.de/dp/3902732008/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_1?pf_rd_p=556245207&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=3898090965&pf_rd_m=A3JWKAKR8XB7XF&pf_rd_r=6HMXFG9XDYCAD03QQZD7
I have just come back from a tour of the Gustav Line battlefields and the French cemetery at Venafro created quite an impression. Many of the soldiers in the FEC were North African Muslims. Here is a link to a clip from Days of Glory showing the attack that breaks through South of Cassino on 11 May 1944. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIsK35A5zvI Its a Franco Moroccan production that could be described as "Saving Private Said"
Thanks so much to everybody for the leads, suggestions, and ideas here-- I'm looking forward to diving into the topics mentioned, checking out the recommended books, and watching "Days of Glory," which looks fantastic. I hope there will be more leads to come!
