Don't worry Toki, your not the only one.

My alternative response was going to be:
I had to take Statistics 3 times in college before I finally passed the class...How I refer to Statistics, singular or plural, is unprintable in a family friendly forum.

Yes, I am a Math Atheist.

Wondered about the Maths/ Math issue.
Math encompasses all. like war- it says enough, without the trouble of the extra keystroke.

Mathmatics is plural? Perhaps it was viewed so at one time but now the approach is much more unified so Mat makes sense. Statistics on the other had are almost never singular they are the results of analyzing various sets of data. You don't see Chemistry or Engineering pluralized do you?

Mat is used here as an abbreviation of University subjects as is Chem and Eng etc. I was talking about Math v Maths.

    Whatever rocks your boat!

I guess I just don't view "mathamatics" as a plural but rather see it as a single field of study so "math" makes more sense than "maths". Stats and statistics is a bit different as one never looks at a single statistic when doing any sort of reasonable study. Of course you could argue that one seldom uses any single mathematical technique as well. On the other hand "data" in the US is often treated as the singular when the plural is probably more accurate. No idea why that came about.

I can't answer your query, Toki. I guess it just one of those, like the plural of deer is deer. Odd to me that it is goose/geese but not moose/meese. I also wonder why if a teacher taught, why didn't a preacher praught?
