I grew up about 5 miles from where Extreme began. I used to drive by beach front bars with "Extreme" on the marquee and laugh to my friends that a band that starts on Revere Beach will never make it anywhere. I was wrong. I never got into the band (the only metal that I actually buy is Metallica) but I did see Gary Cherone play the role of Jesus a couple of times in the Boston Rock Opera Company's production of Jesus Christ Superstar (probably around 1993 or 1994). He was excellent and I shall always hold him in high regard for those performances.
I'm listening to *shudder* Blur's 'Coffee and TV.' Felt like something bland and repetative, what can I say.
So far today: Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms Dire Straits - Romeo & Juliet Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing Dire Straits - So Far Away The Beatles - Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da The Beatles - Back in the USSR The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Currently listening to Wes Montgomery Plays for Lovers. Brilliant album so far. I am listening for free on Lala.com. Later this afternoon it will be Clash (London Calling) and Rage Against the Machine when I drive to pick my son up at school.
And speaking of Willie Nelson--(just kidding!) Johnny Cash, I heard two of his greats played this morning including: "I Walk The Line" and one that is not an original of his but was actually Gene Autry's signature song: "Back In The Saddle Again." "I'm back in the saddle again, out where a friend is a friend.............." "Ridin' the range once more, totin' my 'ol .44......" I think I actually like Johnny's rendition of Genes song the best. The way the man plays the Guitar-is absolutely amazing. Some others I haven't heard in years and heard late last night after watching the great Charlton Heston & Yul Brynner movie: The Buccanneer, are: "America" by: Neil Diamond. "Undercover Angel" by: Alan O'Day. "I Hear You Knocking" by: Dave Edmonds. "Knock Three Times" by: Tony Orlando & Dawn. "Fly Like An Eagle" by: The Steve Miller Band. "Abradabracadabra" by: The Steve Miller Band. "Right Time Of The Night" by: Jeniffer Barnes. "Groovy Kind of Love" by: Phil Collins. "I Saw Her Standing There" by: The BeaUlls. "Iko Iko" by: The Dixie Cups. Yeah, I admit that I like a few Chick groups. "With A Little Luck" by: Paul McCartney & Wings. "Common Man" by: I can't recall his name. "Flash Gordon" by: Queen. Which is one of only two of their songs I like. "We Are The Champions" also by: Queen-which is the only other song I like by them. "Wooly Bully" by: Sam the Sham & the Pharohs. (SP?) "Strike Up The Band" by: Frank Vignote. This is some fine new Jazz music. "Oh Yeah" by: Joe Baione. This is more and much newer Jazz music.
Listening to the new Buck Cherry album at my son's request. I find it derivative but he is not old enough to realize it!
Thanks! London Calling is always on my list of albums that would have to come to a desert album with me! It is brilliant. Simply brilliant.
Hmm, I think I'll be having a Jonny Cash afternoon as I sort my gear out to go away tomorrow. Great stuff.
Stefan, speaking of "The Man In Black," have you ever heard his rendition of Gene Autry's signature song called: "Back In The Saddle Again?" IMO, I think his version beats out Gene Autry's version. That man sure could pick a Guitar could he not? ;-)) Anyway, if you have never heard it and can find the song-I think that might become a favorite of yours. Take care and best cheers--C.
If you are a serious Cash fan i recomend the box set he did just prior to his death called CASH UNEARTHED.
