I have just found a copy of The Longest Day. It sure is a long film. Didn't it have everyone in it who mattered then. A bit dated now perhaps especially after Spielberge visited the topic.
I liked the fact that in the older movies like the Longest Day, or A Bridge too Far, they don't run of with it into a love story or follow some hero being all awesome like Rambo. But they simply tell you the facts from both sides from the British American, Germans, Canadians, Polish even, all the way from Supreme commanders all they way down to the enlisted men, I enjoyed that. Saving Private Ryan was good, but followed only that one unit and did the whole America is great and all Germans are Nazis thing, which I hate. Last night it was "The Lost Battalion" although ww1 a good movie.
I have my copy of this expaneded edition as well. It's great to see that they restored many deleted scenes in this movie. Over here, most of the delted scenes happened to do with German Sergeant Schroeder. Im glad to see Sam Fullers vision mostly restored. I think he passed away shortly after they started restoring the film. Also, in some of the extras, you get to see Sam Fuller working at his craft.
Forgot to mention that I just recently watched some episodes of the TV series: COMABT & Twelve O'Clock High, on the American Life Network. Last night I finally had time to watch: From Here To Eternity, on DvD. Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra, Montgomery Clift & Ernest Borgnine; were all great in that film.
I just finished watching The Manchurian Candidate for the first time. I wanted to read up about it and saw anouther version was made in 2004. I watched the 1962 version of it. I was thinking how much Hillery Clinton and the power hungry wife of the Senator looked and sounded alike. Anouther thought I had was about Sirhan Sirhan and the killing of Bobby Kennedy. Hardly anything is written about him and no one to my knowledge has done interviews with him. Brain washing must be a very powerful thing and I wonder how much of it is being done in the world today. I suppose alot since getting someone to blow theirselves up in a crowd of people takes some doing. If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it. It will get you to think deep thoughts on human behavior. If you are not into deep thinking then looking a Janet Leigh's legs will make you happy too.
Bro, you said a mouth full--speaking about the she-devil and the senators power hungry wife. I can't stand either of them. OK, the American Life Network plays some good stuff on TV late nights. First, I struggeled through one 2nd season episode of The Rat Patrol, then I was rescured when they played a second season episode of COMBAT, then I was hitting my stried and enjoyed the one Twelve O'Clock High episode that was played in between COMBAT episodes. The 2nd COMBAT episode had Nick Adams in it and was called: Bridgehead. Ahhhh, what a great night of entertainment that was ;-))
Just caught an episode of "Bomber Crew" (a UK production) on the Military History Channel which is taking 5 grandchildren of RAF personnel from WWII and training them to eventually fly as a crew on a Lancaster. Three of the guys are competing for pilot; the losers become the navigator and radioman. Two others (a woman and man) are competing for top turret gunner , I think. Background is given on their grandfathers and interviews with living RAF crew members are also used to let the audience know what challenges where there for such a young crew in WWII and Bomber Command. It's a great concept: why couldn't a US production company do the same here??? I hope the four part (?) series will be available on DVD. It's a keeper!
That sounds good on paper but if you owned a Lancaster would you let some student pilot fly it ? I know I sure would not ! I would find an ex Shackleton pilot with lots of hours to fly my Lancaster.
Last night on the Military Channel (screw the History Channel) they were playing episodes of the Doc series: Battlefields--which I hadn't seen in about 12 or so years. They are a most excellent short series. Tonights TV viewing will include an episode of: Voyage To the Bottom of the Sea, followed by an episode of: Land of the Giants - which is followed by another episode of: Voyage To the Bottom of the Sea.
I have to change what I posted about last nights TV viewing as I found out that TCM was honoring CHARLTON HESTON and played two of his Westerns (the irst I cought about 1/2 way through and don't know the movies name) and then they played Major Dundee (with the new soundtrack--which I hate) that they included with it's dvd release after this fine film had been restored. Thankfully, they also left it where you could play the movie with the original soundtrack as well. They they played: Soylent Green - which has him teamed up with Edward G. Robinson. BTW, and sadly, this was Edward G. Robinsons last movie. Being his last, im glad this great was with another great (Heston) before he passed away. Tonights viewing will probably be a Charlton Heston movie: The Naked Jungle.
Recently got a boxed DVD set of the Frank Cappra's 7 part series "Why We Fight". Am watching it with my 19 yo son right now. The fisrt part centers on events leading to Pearl Harbor. Excellent so far!
That's a good movie-one which I haven't seen in at least 20 or more years. I wish it would be released on DvD. Last night's late night viewing on the Military Channel: I saw 2 hrs of a Doc/Bio series called: Medal of Honor, in which they interviewed several WWII Medal of Honor Recipients-who told their stories of their experiances. It was sure nice to see that the ones interviewed, looked in very good health and was also nice to see Walter Ehlers among those interviewed.
On saturday night Nazijager I and II. New footage at least to me on several people, I'm not sure but in one I think it was heydrich getting married. Also saw the faces of the nazi criminals in Nuremberg when they saw footage from the camps with loads of dead. Goring almost cried and Hess was getting hysterical. That was sorta "weird". Liked the new footage anyway.
I caught a HD program, "Operation Sea Dragon", last night. It was great; the photography and information on how the coalition navies keep the Persian Gulf open to the oil supertankers and protect the coalition ships themselves was superb! Highly recommended!
Seen more episodes of COMBAT as well as of The Rifleman. Chuck Connors was bad-assed and he is sorely missed.
for krieg tonight on the box will be . days of glory . with gregory peck haven't seen this one in menny a year.... best krieg
