Sepp Dietrich awarding men of the 1st. SS Regiment infantry Assault badges. The grenadiers are all chosen men and are all very big & tall- probably all well over six feet. I believe the minimum height at the early war stage for this troop was 5'11''.

Regardless of their physical prowess, the Regiment only performed at an average level compared to Army infantry regiments in Polish, Dutch, and French campaigns. It is interesting to note that the grenadiers from the same unit- which spearheaded the Ardennes Offensive in 1944 were much less physically impressive. The minimum height for troopers had dropped to around 5'8'' or 5' 9''.

I don't think there is anything wrong to think that those guys do look sharp in their uniforms or beautiful woman look great in their style of attire--but one must be aware of the political context and understands that the appeal can be dangerous.

 

yes, this how the HJ recruted so many youngsters, unfiroms, drums, parades , scouting, campfires , marches etc... Brainwashed from the start and some potential recruits for the SS too.

How often I see a CoD5 player jumping up and down at the mention of Germany and its Tigers and MP40s and V-2 rockets.

I have a theory, derived from my friends taking World History AP, and still playing CoD5. Friends that still idolize the German military prowess.

What did it take to bring Germany down? Other than Germany, arguably the three most powerful nations in the world. No doubt, the Wehrmacht displayed exceptional skill, fortitude, and doggedness in order to survive for as long as it did. The entire length of the war is saturated with German victories, no matter how the war was actually going.
Blitzkrieg, Barbarossa, the fall of France, all when the war was going well for Germany.
North Africa, Stalingrad, the determined defense of Italy.
Kursk, Market Garden, the Ardennes, the last gasps of a military juggernaut.

All these victories magnified by the new platform of video games, took on a titanic, over-rated spotlight in the eyes of the run n' gun gamers. Not to mention the lumbering Tiger, almost canonized Bismark, the MP44, the Me262, all of which stoke the fires of a fantasy, heroic world of the German military.

Somehow, in a school history textbook, Germany seems truly unstoppable. The short, concise accounts of the war describe a quick, surprising victory for the Axis, followed by a tough, long, and difficult campaign by the Allies. From all viewpoints, of course the Axis are cooler. Of course, in favor of expediency, the books don't tell the story of cornered, Hitler Youth and senior citizen Germany, of the Japanese militia with spears and rocks at the end of the war. Logistics, industry, economy, somehow all do not find their places in a world history book. Quite not to blame, seeing as how it covers 11,000 years in a short 31 chapters.

The SS is just an augmentation of these myths of Germany's invincibility. Kind of interesting how Germany seems invincible to the common person, even though they...umm...lost?

IN MY OPINION The SS and the Nazis were a bunch of A**holes who are responsible for the deaths of millions of people for no reason. The Third Reich accomplished nothing and gave even less back to the world. IN the end they got their a**es handed to them.

I truly feel sorry for the regular German soldiers, sailors, airmen and civillians who were unfortunate enough to have been caught up in the Nazi Hysteria as their acheivments will always be tarnished by the acts of such a maniacle self serving hate filled group as the SS.

After almost 6 years of fighting and 12 years in power the Nazi's and the SS left Europe in ruins as a result of their ultimate defeat.

Why anyone would choose to emulate, praise or defend their actions is beyond my comprehension. They were all a bunch of A**holes.

Nobody in history was quite like Hitler...usually the people spot lunatics before they rise to the role of leader. I truly don't think there will ever be another Hitler, although there will always be war, always be killing, and always be, of all things, utterly pointless.

And along with war, along with the 99 percent of good men fighting for their countries and lives, there will be that 1 percent that finds the perverse pleasure that they sought, pleasure in killing, murdering, raping, burning, and all the beautiful wonders that some people see in the SS.

If only the boundaries were clear, then we could fight the right people. Joe shooting Hans or Frans shooting Tommy is no good. It should be everyone shoot Hitler. To understand this vague point I just proposed, read Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

i agree with yuo. i think yuo are right about you;re 4 paragraph on about people loving and having plussure in seeing people being mured and being rape and burning people and there belongings and thats why sick mental people love the ss and what to fight for the waffen ss.
but what is scary that there is so many that people (not talking about members on this site) that fit into thise catorgary. it's disgracful that people side with the evil side and not the victim side.

It's just that, after reading so many blood curdling things that the SS did just in the West, makes it impossible for me to even pantasizes about being the SS. The Americans were finding churches turned into slaughterhouses of women, children and the elderly in every village after they rolled back the black tide in the Ardennes. Stavelot, Granmenil, Petit Coo, in those villages and towns, they found machinegunned civilians, mutilated naked women, smashed babies. It makes one shudder to think what was done on a routine basis in Russia. I just can't take any argument trying to bring the Americans or Common Wealth troops to their level. Some prisoners were shot. No mass executions of German civilians had ever been ordered in my research, nor any explict order to take no prisoners until the SS began the systematic killing of POWs.
