Eh? The USA has probably the largest active population of Christians in the First World. I mean, they take their Bible seriously there. If you think the Americans are irreligious, then God help the British

The reason for my existence on earth is my conception by my parents. There is no purpose to life but life itself - to ensure the continuation and prospering of your species, without any conscious sentient being to have decreed it so. I exist because my parents followed up on this purpose, and if I were a common slave to my instincts like every other being on earth then I would myself procreate as well. But as we are all aware, mankind doesn't need every one of its kind to reproduce anymore to maintain its numbers, and its habitat (earth) could do well if a few more people would decide against the meaning of their existence.

Hey Gunter, 16% atheists? Guess what. In the Netherlands church attendance has dropped to about 20% of the population in recent years; the majority of the people does not claim to adhere to any religion, though they are not atheists. It's a step in the right direction, but not far enough yet... ;)

Also, like Ricky said, Christmas is just another festivity and a few days off for working people. Whoever seriously believes it has anything to do with their religion is fooling himself unless he is, in fact, a Germanic tribal pagan.

Take into mind that a lot of people who belong to a religion don't actively practice it.

Actually there were people before the jews and they are still around today.
Talk to a priest he will tell you they are not condemmed to death, or a rabbi.

    interesting
let's change the question : in your opinion, why are there human beings on this Earth ?(It almost amounts to asking " 'why does the Universe exist?" as Tony said, but not exactly) because that's life, right ?

    majorwoody.

Just as an aside. 98% of the world's population does not pre-date religion.

Such has been the population explosion in the last 75 years that it is estimated that approximately 70% - 75% of all the human beings to have ever lived on this planet, are alive today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Accidental chance, as I said. If you study the way in which life has evolved, it throws up some interesting insights.

First of all, life seems to occur wherever it possibly can. Bacterial life been found in intensely hot and poisonous environments, and in extremely cold ones (in Antarctic ice which has been buried deep for Millennia).

Secondly, life eventually gets organised into more complex forms - animals and plants - whenever the conditions are suitable for long enough.

Thirdly, changes in environmental circumstances have had major impacts on animal and plant life - some disappear, others appear and flourish. Sometimes these changes are sudden (major meteorite impact or volcanic activity) but more usually gradual, mainly climate change for various reasons. Which animals survive and which go under is down to how well they can cope with the changes - which is down to random chance.

Finally, there is no evolutionary law which says that intelligent life - in terms of human intelligence - has to evolve. Large and complex animals existed for hundreds of millions of years without developing high intelligence. The fact that one branch of primates developed such intelligence, leaving the other primates (apes) behind is down to a combination of the the right environmental circumstances, and sheer luck.

Basically, our existence is down to a chain of circumstances stretching back millions of years. If anything had happened to disrupt that chain, we wouldn't be having this discussion - because we wouldn't be here.

It almost goes without saying that there is no guarantee that humanity has a long future ahead - although whatever mess we make of the Earth, I have no doubt that life in some form will carry on developing, as it always has.

Many parts of Christianity are formed from Pagan traditions, such as painting eggs on easter.

I beleive the Roman Catholic church is in the process of getting rid of limbo or at least ultering it. I havent read any follow up articles so I cant be sure.

Wow - what power the Church has, to cast into non-existence a entire sector of the afterlife!

While they're at it, perhaps they could get rid of Hell as well - except for a few individuals who I would nominate :D
