Favourite, and I watch it every time it is on: Pride of the Yankees Somehow never saw until recently, Paul Newman in "Somebody Up There Likes Me", definitely at the top of my list Others: We Were Marshall Sea Biscuit Brian's Song (Carl,it's about Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears) Field of Dreams The Natural Jackie Robinson Story The Rookie Ken Burns "Baseball" on PBS Phar Lap Rudy Heart Like A Wheel Ali Pat and Mike Legend of Bagger Vance Bobby Jones The Black Stallion If its not a bio-pic then I like the ones like Field of Dreams or The Natural Endured Slap Shot (sorry Otto!) but then I have to live with up to 3 or 4 nights of NHL every week from October to June - so I don't go looking for the movie version!
Hi Michelle, great choices. I've seen some of them but had forgotten about them--especially Brians Song. Geeze it's been ages since I last saw it-which I think was when it was in the Theaters. PAt and Mike and the Jackie Robinson movies-both rock-I loved them both. I watched Field of Dreams-only for the chance to see Burt Lancaster. He's always been a household favorite-same as most of the actors in the movies on your list. Pride of the Yankees-is excellent. Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan made as great of a team as John Wayne & Ward Bond did. Have you ever seen Champion? which has Kirk Douglas and Arthur Kennedy in it. Also, one I greatly liked from the first time I ever saw it was: Gentleman Jim w/ Errol Flynn and Alan Hale Sr. Take care Michelle-and Cheers--C. PS, I haven't seen Sea Bisuit--yet, but I intend to soon as I can rent or order a copy of it. Sight unseen-I know it must be an awsome movie-judging all the good"press" I see people give it not only ust here-but at Duke Wayne and WTG sites.
Some already listed are superb. Some I wouldn't watch a second time and sort of lost interest while they were going on Stalone's "Victory" stands out. Even though I enjoyed watching Pele do "his thing". The plot stunk. Heart Like a Wheel is one of my favorites, I have watched it over and over. Another movie I just watched a few weeks ago was great, "When it was a game" is the title, and another one was "61*" the story of Maris' and Mantle's assault on the Babe's 60 homers in a season. One of the sub-plots was the reason the asterisik ended up on Roger Marris' 61 homers, and how it was the first * placed on a record, and that it was only removed after Marris had died. Great show, his widow and children were invited to the Cardinals' games as McQuirre was approaching the record, and he asked that he would be allowed to touch the bat (which Roger hit the 61st with) before he hit the 62nd of the season. Wonderful show, loved every minute of it. Mostly because it was a true "based on reality" show.
Even though they've already been mentioned: Caddyshack Tin Cup Slapshot I don't care much for "serious" movies about sports. Most get too sappy for me.
My favorites are all built into the previous posts and can change from day to day. Gary Cooper gives me chills when he gives Lou's farewell speech in Pride of the Yankees and I love all of the other baseball movies mentioned. Hoosiers is a great film. Here are a few more that are well worth watching: Chariots of Fire A League of their Own Bad News Bears (the original) Damn Yankees Glory Road The Big Lebowski Breaking Away Dog Town and Z Boys Jerry McGuire National Velvet The Hustler The Color of Money Bend it Like Beckham
I forgot about "The Big Lebowski." That was a great movie. I read in imdb that Jeff Bridges furnished his charactor's wardrobe from his own personal wardrobe. He wasn't really acting there, he was being himself for the most part and having fun while doing it.
