WHAT? Who would ever volunteer to serve in the SS after all we know.

I don't think I will like where this is going to go.

I'd thank you, but I cannot fathom or excuse the fact that anyone would want to side with what amounts to evil, genocidal maniacs. I'd only be doing what any human should... right? :)

While I'm not accusing every German soldier of being evil, I surely would not be able to look past the fact that 20 years before - just a kilometer from where I live - Germans were killing Danes trying to cross the border into Denmark (for a time, where I live was actually Germany). I could not be able to look past the obvious lies in the flyers dropped over my country on April 9th, 1940 stating that the Germans merely wanted to "protect our country" as they came - guns blazing - into a town 13 kilometers from where I live.

I know that there were 7000 of my countrymen in the SS, a distasteful fact... but I could never, ever turn my back on Denmark or fall prey to propaganda.

    Sorry if I'm ranting...

My previous signature said "Sit tibi terra levis" - May the earth rest lightly upon your body. Appropriate, I think.

No problem there :). The question of "Why?" comes up quite often when some members come here idolizing the enemy . It just amazes some here that a member would want to fight against the same country they were born in and knowing in some orginizations what they did . Especially in this thread LOL

So I can't choose to join the elite corps of the German war machine because of the Einzatsgruppen?

Here is a question, someone joins the SS serves on the Eastern Front and is never involved with the crimes committed in certain Camps or by certain groups can they be labeled a War Criminal?

The SS was indicted as a criminal organization by the Nuremberg court. Oh, as a sidenote, the Waffen-SS were not but you were not mentioning those, rather the SS. And nobody here but you even mentioned the Einsatzgruppe.

And to be a war criminal you wouldn't need to serve at "certain Camps", ordinary fieldwork included a sizable number of atrocities.

Of course you can choose whatever rabble corps you feel like, take a look at some comments made in the recent past here: http://www.ww2f.com/wwii-general/25881-ss-requirements.html

Perhaps he should read some of the other threads where other posters who have the same proclivity towards the same likes have tried to defend thier desire to be a member of the SS or Waffen SS. Most seem to be from countries other then Austria or Germany.

All SS units were built upon the Nazi racial ideology. That says it all, I think.

Serving with the SS alone implies complacency with the atrocities that the organization committed. Their claim to be soldiers like any others must be rejected absolutely.

The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg stated that the SS was utilized for purposes which were criminal under the Charter (of the International Military Tribunal), involving the persecution and extermination of the Jews, brutalities and killings in concentration camps, excesses in the administration of occupied territories, the administration of the slave-labor program and the mistreatment and murder of prisoners of war.'

There are just far too many such instances for the SS to escape condemnation.

I'm sorry, but even in a "what-if" scenario like this one, standing up to be counted with the enemy is not an admirable choice. One simply is aspiring to be associated with nothing more than genocidal evil.

Can I ask you a question? Are you from Germany or Austria?

If not, then why don't you want to join your own country's forces?

Well then you get a nice, easy job with no chance of getting killed. A type of job any sane person would enjoy.

I could sit at home an dput my feet up:pipesmoke:

However if someone for example asked me in the 1940s what my biggest fear would be I woud have said The Soviet Union (BTW I am not a Yank) that is why I would have allied myself with the Axis.

Why would I join the Waffens SS?

Simple really they are the elite troops of the axis, it would be like joining the elite troops of the allies provided they where fighting against Communism.

I am afraid that's all it is, nothing genoide esq about that?

Give you that one, and more likely the reason for some of the lesser not a good word lesser, but smaller countries of Europe for siding with Hiter. More likely anti Russia than pro Hitler.

I don't understand why you would rather not choose the Whermacht. You may disagree but (I think they have the smarter uniforms, and both (Whermacht and SS) had round about the same weaponry so you can't use "but the weapons are so much cooler" argument.
