Ah, the Horse Soldiers, one of my personal Duke film favorites.
As for Duke in Genghis Khan, well... the role just did not fit John Wayne. I wonder why he agreed to do the film in the first place. Does anybody here know the reason why John Wayne did the movie?

Hi Falcon, im not positive on why he did that film but, I THINK it was because he had made a deal of sorts to make a movie or two for some other studio-and one he had to make-was a costumer piece-which happened to be this one. I shake my head no-no whenever I see a picture of him in this movie. I couldn't believe he made such a film. I'll ask your question to a few I know over at either the DukeWayne site or the John Wayne site-and see what I can get.

Any choice you make on a Duke film to watch-will be a good one-with that one infamous exception (the Kahn film).

The Longest Day didn't have as much Duke in it as I liked to have had but-he did have some good parts though. ;-))

Rio Lobo you can't lose with either ;-)) That was one od the first if not THE first Duke movies I ever saw. Over the years, i'd estimate that I have seen that movie no less than 50 times. Christopher Mitchum was great as the Confederate Sergeant who first captured Duke (Col. Cord McNally) Having Jack Elam in the film was a definate plus. He was great as "the old man" who was also the Father of the Christopher Mitchum character. BTW-if you had not known, Christopher Mitchum is one of Robert Mitchums Sons-and also the Nephew of John Mitchum-one of Roberts Brothers.

Those are great serials. I have two copies of the Three Musketeers and one copy of the other two serials-The Hurricane Express and the Shadow of the Eagle. These are fun to watch. Also, in the Three Musketeers-Noah Beery Jr. appears (alive that is) only in the first episode.

Thanks. I look forward to learning why Duke did it. Still, like anyone, John Wayne is human and can have an off day.

Hi Falcon, I just found out why he did the movie. This is from the official John Wayne website-which is owner and operated by Wayne Enterprises-and by Dukes youngest Son-Ethan Wayne.

Duke was at whichever Studios that movie was to be made at-visiting the office of some execuative Producer-and was in that guys office waiting for him to return. While sitting at the Exec Prods desk-Duke dropped somehting on the floor next to the small trashcan next to the desk. Duke happened to notice that someone had thown a movie script into the trashcan and picked it up and read the movies proposed tiotle-which is the one that was used.

Duke read began reading the script and had apparently liked it enough to become interested in the character and the time period that it took place in. Well, that exec came back to his office and Duke asked why was this movie scrip-scrapped? The exec said they thought the movie would be a dud and a complete money-waster if made. Duke said that he would like to make that film - much to that producers chagrin-and development of that movie was begun almost immediately. Duke wanted the leading part and also control of some who were to be cast in it. Duke was very fond of Mexican Actor-Pedro Armendariez-and of course longtime friend and co-worker-Paul Fix.

When those two were hired-work on the movie began-and they say-the rest is history.

I'll be spending Christmas w/ the Duke and the John Ford Stock Company on Christmas Day through New Years. The first movie i'll see will be Three Godfathers-which is only fitting.

I just recently picked up and watched: North To Alaska. I love the theme song as well-which is sang by the late-and Great--Johnny Horton.

Hi Scott, WTID, that it was--a great movie. Capucine sure made it more enjoyable to watch. Oh and also having Mickey Shaunnesey as the resident Comdey Relief-certainly didn't hurt the movie any ;-))

WTID, I HOPE that wasn't about Duke though? ;-))

Heh heh, I certainly HOPE so-because I think he was married to Pilar at the time. Tell you one thing-Duke knew where the best spots were-to party at. Heidelberg, was nice-very nice.

Oh and, the two large leather Registers could be looked through -when I ate there. I don't know if that's the case thesedays?
