    Heer General,
Might the commander be Maj General Edward Dietl who commanded the 3rd Mountain Division?

    General Dietl.

To finally answer NoName's question: I prefer a more objective point of view. The Anschluss, even though supported by major parts of Austria, was a political blackmail with military force.

With due acknowledgement, KnightMove, my view is objective. It is based on factual knowledge and documentation, not supposition.

The 'blackmail' allegation is much overdone and incorrect. More a retrospective, political consideration than actual event.

But this is a quiz thread.

    My regards.

Before the outbreak of hostilities in 1939, who did Hitler regard as his two most 'brutal-looking' Generals?

    Real nice and easy one:

Over Which Island did VMF 214 destroy her largest amount of enemy fighters in a single sortie?

By the way, it was indeed Dietl... :D

And Hitler's 'most brutal looking generals' were Hugo Sperrle and... Cannot think of the other one. All German generals were quite ugly...

By the way, what-the-heck is VMF?

    V = Aircraft
    M = Marine
    F = Fighter (or in 1940's venacular "Fighting"}

VMF = US Marine Fighter (or Fighting) Squadron.

VF = US Navy Fighter (or Fighting) Squadron

could also be abreviated as FitRon or MarFitRon, but only informally.

and the list goes on and on from the beginning of US Naval Aviation there's been at least 147 squadron designations, though some are repeats, some were discontinued and then used again years later, some change to a different meaning, e.g. VT went from Torpedo Plane Squadron in 1921 to Torpedo-Bomber Squadron from 1922 to 1930, to Torpedo Squadron from 1930 to 1946, then the designation went away until 1960 when it re-emerged as Training Squadron and is still that today.

Those specifically used in WWII numbered about 63 different designations, though some of them had more than one meaning, to wit:

AES - Marine Aircraft Engineering Squadron

    BLIMPRON - LTA Squadron
    BLPHEDRON - Blimp Headquarters Squadron

STAGRON - Special Air Task Force Squadron (VK)
    VB - Bombing Squadron
    VBF - Bombing Fighting Squadron
    VC - Composite Squadron
    VCS - Cruiser Scouting Squadron
    VD - Photographic Squadron
    VE - Evacuation Squadron
    VF - Fighting Squadron
    VF(N) - Night Fighting Squadron
    VFN - Night Fighting Squadron
VGF - Escort-Fighter Squadron (Escort Carrier)
VGS - Escort-Scouting Squadron (Escort Carrier)
    VH - Rescue Squadron
VJ - Utility Squadron orGeneral Utility Squadron
VK - Special Air Task Force Squadron (STAGRON)
    VMB - Marine Bomber Squadron
    VMBF - Marine Fighter/Bomber Squadron
    VMD - Marine Photographic Squadron
    VMF - Marine Fighter Squadron
VMF(N) - Marine Night Fighter Squadron
    VMJ - Marine Utility Squadron
    VML - Marine Glider Squadron
    VMO - Marine Observation Squadron
    VMR - Marine Transport Squadron
    VMS - Marine Scouting Squadron
VMSB - Marine Scout Bombing Squadron
VMTB - Marine Torpedo Bomber Squadron
    VN - Training Squadron
    VO - Observation Squadron
    VOC - Composite Spotting Squadron
    VOF - Observation Fighter Squadron
VOS - Air Spotting or Observation Spotter Squadron
    VP - Patrol Squadron
    VPB - Patrol Bombing Squadron
    VPW - Weather Reconnaissance Squadron
    VR - Air Transport Squadron
VR - Fleet Logistic Air Squadron
    VR - Transport Squadron
VRE - Air Transport Evacuation Squadron
    VRF - Air Ferry Squadron
VRF - Air Ferry Transport Squadron
VRF - Transport Ferry and Service Squadron
    VRJ - Utility Transport Squadron
VRS - Air Ferry Service Squadron
VRS - Ferry Command Service Squadron
    VS - Scouting Squadron

    VX - Experimental Squadron
    XVF - Experimental Development Squadron
    XVJ - Experimental Utility Squadron
    ZJ - Blimp Utility Squadron
    ZP - Airship Patrol Squadron
ZP - Airship Patrol Squadron (All-Weather Antisubmarine)
    ZP - Airship Squadron
    ZP - Blimp Squadron
    ZP - LTA Patrol Squadron

Lastly, the two squadrons my father flew in in WWII - fought at Coral Sea, Midway in VF-42, and in the Solomons Campaign with VF-11. VF-11 scan is from actual side panel from his airplane (an F4F-4).

Thanks for the clarifying, Rich! Thank you a lot! ;)

I thought the question had something to do with the 'big bullseye shooting of the Marianas' on June 19th 1944...

Rite, my first attempt at a question so here goes...

What was remarkable about the parachute used by Baron Von Der Heydte in operation Stosser?

For a bonus point, why did he use it?
