Well, judging by the short supporting story, humanity survives, but just.

okay, changed some settings in my computer and voila, there's roels picture

i say it's surrender and he feels himself ashamed that he has to surrender. i say he has been defeated by somebody that normaly wouldn't be his superior.

second impression: he could be looking calm and professional for footprints on the ground and give a sing to who are whatever is standing behind himself

Hm, you guys interpet this picture a bit more negatively than it was intended. "Loyalty" is the filename (or actually "loyalty2" because it is a second version), and "swearing allegiance" as Ricky said comes closest. This soldier is not humiliated or enraged. The seriousness of his look is supposed to express sincerity.

I'm glad you like it, though. It was done on request, so it has to please... Thanks for the compliments.

I can see why 'surrender' was thought of - the mouth does make him look quite upset.

My last couple of lunch breaks I've been trying come up with a better Prologue for my Nameless War. Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

    Nameless War Prologue

By the early decades of the twenty first century it was generally accepted that life could, and quiet probably did, exist elsewhere in the universe. We directed our telescopes towards the stars and drew up plans to visit the moon and planets of our own solar system. But instead something happen we could never have imagined.

On the Fifth March 2026 life came looking for us.

They were members of a race that called themselves the Aèllr. But they were not invaders or diplomats. Their ship was a small freighter; lost and damaged they had hoped to make repairs and leave without being noticed.

They were to be disappointed; contact was made. Unfortunately it involved individuals, on both sides, who were manifestly unsuitable for such a heavy responsibly. First Contact degenerated into a firefight and humanity entered the second space age with blood on its hands.

Some of the alien crew were captured; their vessel was taken without further damage. The ship was old, dilapidated and damaged. It was also massively advanced compared to anything we possessed. It was like comparing the Wright Brothers plane to a jetfighter.

Our leaders convened. There was no doubt that the Aèllr would come looking for their lost ship. Humanity would have to stand ready for the expected assault.

The old curse of humanity: when in doubt we always reach for a weapon.

In truth Aèllr were a civilised people, far more civilised than us. Their society was peaceful and prosperous, a place where no one slipped through the cracks. The worlds of the Aèllr were the kind of utopia man has dream of but never achieved.

The Aèllr themselves were a methodical but cautious people. In their two centuries in deep space they had advanced slowly and carefully but when their people went missing they were determined to abandon them to the long dark.

Three years after First Contact a scoutship arrived in our solar system. They found us. They found a small satellite the first ship had left in orbit. They heard the last message the lost freighter had uploaded before being overrun. They realised that the Aèllr had finally encountered another sentient life form… and it was hostile.

Six months later a squadron of Aèllr ships returned to Earth to recover their people. By force if necessary.

Even at this late hour conflict could have been averted. Neither side wanted war; both were willing to negotiate. But both sides were frightened. A condition guaranteed to cause mistakes.

So humanity found itself fighting a war it could neither seriously hope to win or afford to loose. The first battle of the war saw the virtual annihilation of the human force for only light Aèllr losses. The destruction of Earth appeared at hand but instead the Aèllr retreated. Thus the Contact War started and set a pattern that would be repeated over the next four years.

As a race the Aèllr had not fought a war for over a century and a half. Even the possibly of war had been inconceivable for nearly as long. As such they were a race without soldiers or war makers for they recognised how precious life truly was. When pitted against human pragmatism these, the best features of their entire society, became glaring flaws.

Such was the difference in strength the conflict should have been a swift and one-sided affair, but again and again the Aèllr squandered advantages. Humanity staggered from crisis to crisis but never admitted defeated. In the end the Aèllr people tired of war and forced their leaders to make peace.

For nearly thirty years an uneasy peace has reigned between the Aèllr and humanity. There are those who hope The Contact War was a single terrible aberration and those who stand read to fight the next war.

More minor points, just trying to make sure that people won't be distracted from the marvellous story by some tiny little detail...

I like this story a great deal, Ebar.

    Thanks people!

Here's a drawing I made to try to get a good picture of a character I'm using for a story. He is supposed to look like a none-too-skilled-but-100%-loyal-and-dedicated soldier who has fought a lost battle against a superior enemy for two days in a row. What do you think?

    PS: Chainmail. Never again. ;)
PSPS: for those who are interested I can explain every little detail on this drawing, after all it's part of a fantasy world I created and I like detail.

Roel: My girlfriend suspect that you use too hard pencil. Shadows dont look as dark as they could.
